How Coupon Websites Work in 2026

Coupon websites help shoppers save money by aggregating discounts/ deals from retailers. They operate primarily through affiliate marketing, earning commissions on sales driven via their links.

Affiliate marketing in coupon space works on three levels

  1. Coupon Website ie. Publisher Level
  2. Affiliate Network ie. Network Level
  3. Brand ie. Advertiser Level

Coupon Websites ie. Publishers drive shoppers to their website using organic or paid traffic( Google ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads etc) where the shopper searches for deals by store, category, or product, then click a coupon or link that redirects to the retailer's site with the code pre-applied or ready to copy. During checkout, shoppers enter the code in a designated field, where the system validates it against rules like expiration dates or minimum spend.

Coupon sites partner directly with brands or affiliate networks like Rakuten, CJ Affiliate, Awin, Impact.com to obtain promo codes and deals. Some generate exclusive codes directly with merchants, while others aggregate public offers or accept user submissions after verification. Popular examples includeRetailMeNot, Coupons.com, and Slickdeals, which list deals from thousands of retailers.

These Affiliate networks partner with brands on one side and publishers on the other.Specific tracking links are provided by networks to publishers which attached to the coupon link. So when a shopper clicks on the coupon link a the tracking link attached to it is used to validate which coupon website has arrived from to the brands website.

Revenue Model

These platforms earn commissions—often 20% or more—on every purchase made/ traffic arrived through their referrals. Additional revenue comes from paid ads, sponsored listings, or premium memberships offering exclusive cashback. Retailers benefit from increased traffic and sales, creating a win-win ecosystem.

Industry Size

The current affiliate marketing industry size is about 15 billion USD. Out of this 60% of market share is dominated by US, 20% in Europe and rest by Asia and Australia.
If the current trend continues the market size will increase to 50 billion USD by 2025 and about 75 billion USD by 2035.
